Dates (include year): July 5-28 (back in USA on July 29th) 24 days and 23 nights
Short Description: (from web site)
This approximately 23-day course begins on the Island of San Cristobal with a a one-week service project in a local school; mornings are spent with the childen exploring tidepools, collecting plankton and helping to re-forest native vegetation. Afternoons are spent exploring different habitats on land and sea and learning about many of the unique animals and plants found only on the Galapagos. The last ten days we travel by boat to several different islands, and discover how the different environments of each island have led to the evolution of different organisms. Sites we visit include Kicker Rock & Lobo Island for snorkeling offshore with sea lions, an active volcano on Isabela Island, a giant tortoise sanctuary and the Charles Darwin Center on Santa Cruz Island, and nesting colonies of seabirds and land iguanas on N. Seymour. Class consists of lectures, readings and discussion on topics on ecology, evolution and conservation. Each student is responsible for an "expert topic" paper and class presentation on a different Galapagos animal, a field ecology investigation and poster presentation with a partner on a topic of student choice, attendance at lectures on Galapagos ecology and evolution, and participation in discussions and written reflections on readings on issues in ecology and conservation of the Galapagos in this very interesting World Heritage Site. We live in hotels in towns on the islands during our stay, and eat in a variety of local restaurants, so there is opportunity to meet some of the people of the Galapagos, to practice your spanish, and to learn about life in a different country and culture.

Teacher at Sea (TAS) program is to give teachers a clearer insight into our ocean planet, a greater understanding of maritime work and studies, and to increase their level of environmental literacy by fostering an interdisciplinary research experience. The program provides a unique environment for learning and teaching by sending kindergarten through college-level teachers to sea aboard NOAA research and survey ships to work under the tutelage of scientists and crew. Then, armed with new understanding and experience, teachers bring this knowledge back to their classrooms. Indeed, the greatest payoff of NOAA's Teacher at Sea program is the enthusiasm for learning more about our ocean planet generated between teachers and students.

Name of Opportunity : Galapagos Marine Ecology Course
Location: Island of San Cristobal and Galapagos Islands, Ecuador.

This workshop is intended for college science faculty. However, workshops held in conjunction with large educator conventions (NABT, NSTA) explicitly target a mixed audience of high school teachers AND college faculty. Teachers who apply for Genomics workshops at other sites may be accepted if space is available. Selection of workshop participants is competitive and based upon an applicant's potential to integrate workshop content into her/his teaching, as determined from the information supplied.

The Spaceward Bound Field Expeditions involve teachers in authentic scientific fieldwork so that they can bring that experience back to their classrooms and assist in the development of curriculum related to human exploration of remote and extreme environments. The NASA Idaho Space Grant Consortium is organizing and sponsoring this expedition for teachers and scientists from Idaho.
By day teachers work in the field alongside scientists. By night they participate in groups to analyze, design and plan how their daytime experiences can be leveraged in their classrooms under the overarching theme of developing a “pedagogy of exploration.” There are expeditions in Idaho, California's Mojave Desert and Utah! Check Website for upcoming adventures.

I did this in California. It was an incredibly rich experience. I think that they may target specific universities to find their teachers, but I believe it is open to anyone.

June 6 - July 26, 2011
This is an excellent 8-week program for high school physics teachers. Teachers work in the physics labs at GT performing new research, use university-grade
equipment to complete an in-depth examination of a modern physics topic, participate in share-a-thons and staff development seminars, and collaborate with an
assigned mentor on the Physics Department faculty. There are also some opportunities in the ECE department, usually.

This week-long teacher workshop, led by the Georgia Aquarium and NOAA’S Gray's Reef NMS staff, will immerse teachers in a way like no other workshop. Teachers will wade into the watery world as they learn about watersheds, water quality, current aquatic issues and river, marsh and reef ecosystems. This workshop takes teachers from the headwaters of the Ocmulgee River to Gray's Reef, 20 miles offshore.
Funding for this workshop is being provided by Improving Teacher Quality Higher Education Funds through the University of Georgia, Georgia Aquarium and NOAA Gray's Reef National Marine Sanctuary

All necessary travel costs associated with teacher participation in the program are covered by the program, including transportation to and from the ship, lodging, and per diem allowance.
